In 1982, the members of the West Point Development
Corporation, a group of enterprising volunteers in the West Prince region of Prince Edward Island,
un dertook the enhancement of their
community for the greater enjoyment of the area's residents and visitors alike.
The focal point of their efforts was the
restoration of the 68 foot tall historic West Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse is one of the tallest and most unique black and white Lighthouses on the Island. The lighthouse was established in 1875 and manned until 1963 when the keeper, who lived in the attached dwelling, retired. Today the lantern, in a bright red housing atop the squared conical tower, operates electrically.
Bringing the historic light back to its former glory has included restoration of the shingled tower itself, with its distinctive broad black stripes on a white background, as well as reconstruction
of the attached dwelling from original blueprints, and the establishment of a museum.
Here artifacts and photographs document the
history of
the Island's lighthouses, with emphasis on the West Point Lighthouse. Also a whistling buoy is now part of the display. You will find many interesting facts about the lighthouse here. Come and wander though the past and imagine yourself as the Light keeper of days gone by. |
